Country to the core
artist Logan Mize took some time to talk to me about Nashville versus London
crowds, growing up in Kansas, and trying out a bit of acting now and then.
Check out our interview below!
Ciara’s Country (CC):
I’m here with Logan Mize after his set at the Nashville Meets London in
Canary Wharf. So to start off Logan, thank you very much for joining me! How
are you enjoying your time here in London?
Logan Mize (LM): I
love it, I love being over here. The people are warm, and I love playing music
for them. We had a great time.
CC: How does it
compare with back home?
LM: Well it’s
different. People tend to absorb music a bit differently here I’ve just
noticed, they maybe listen a bit more intently which is enjoyable for me,
because you spend a lot of time writing lyrics and people seem to be noticing
that more and focusing on that more.
CC: And I think
one of the things that country music fans really enjoy about the genre is the
storytelling aspect of the lyrics – can you tell us a bit about how your
background has influenced your writing?
LM: Yeah, so I’m
from a little town in Kansas, you know very rural and a farming community, so I
grew up in a pretty blue collar setting, there’s not a lot of trees, it’s just
open great plains where I’m from. So I kind of say I’m a bit of a landscape
painter when it comes to writing lyrics. I don’t necessarily write because I
have a certain idea, it’s more of an emotion or a scene that I’ve seen in the
past. So that’s kind of how I approach it.
CC: And out of
all the songs that you’ve written, do you have one that you think has been the
most interesting to write?
LM: Yeah, there’s
a song that’s called Sunflowers that
is now the state song of Kansas that they use for all of the state commercials.
That was definitely my highlight so far, to be able to attribute that to my
home state.
CC: So quite
patriotic then.
LM: Maybe a
little bit, I mean Kansas is called the sunflower state, and there’s a lot of
sunflowers there so to be able to write a song called Sunflowers and have it used by the tourism commercials and all the
state things was just really cool.
CC: And speaking
of commercials, I’ve heard that you’ve starred in a few of them yourself?
LM: I’ve
definitely been on screen, so I did a cotton commercial with Hayden Panettiere
from the show Nashville, and I was in
the show Hart of Dixie and I was able
to go on there, and I won Battle of the Bands, which is easy when it’s written
into the script – we didn’t actually have to play!
CC: Sounds pretty
good! So now that country music is officially growing in the UK, can we expect
to see a bit more of you over here in the future?
LM: I really hope
so, I’m really hoping to do a full UK tour. I mean I’ll stay over here if you
guys will keep me employed – I love it!
CC: And to finish
the interview I wanted to ask – what’s one question you wish you were asked in
an interview but never are?
LM: Haha, ‘are
you drunk?’
CC: And can you
answer that for me?
LM: Not yet!
CC: Well thank
you very much for speaking with me tonight Logan, and thank you for a great
set!
LM: Thank you
very much!
